WHO IS SANGIT OM?

This is a difficult question. Do you really know who you are? I don’t even know who I am and now I should tell you who SANGIT OM is? But at least, looking at his picture, you can get an idea how he looks:

He might look a bit different now, since this photograph is a little outdated, but he still loves to play the same floot. It’s an Indian Bamboo Flute, also called BANSURI.  He uses  Bamboo Flutes on most of his recordings, but also wooden flutes, tin whistles and even a clay flute. He also plays piano – in fact this is his main instrument. He received his first piano lessons when  he was five years old, back in 1959. He learned to play violin later and studied music on the Music University in Hannover (Germany), where he also studied composition with Ladislav Kupcovic. He graduated, but then he wanted to become a jazz musician and played piano in smoky bars (cause that’s how all jazz musicians start).

After a while he felt this was too boring, so he started to travel and this way he learned a lot more about music. In India he found a teacher who showed him how to play the bamboo flute and how difficult it is, to play Indian music. By the way: ”SANGIT OM” is an ancient Indian mantra which means ”music is the sound of inner silence”. His real name is Stefan Petersilge – decide yourself which name you like better!

Naturally he started to merge all his musical influences to find his own unique style. Although he doesn’t like the current system of musical genres (for him music is just music, sometimes good, sometimes bad) it was obvious, that his music could best be described as NEW AGE MUSIC, with a touch of WORLD MUSIC and JAZZ.

He lives since many years in Crete and there he has his own studio, the WORLD SOUND STUDIO. He produced many CDs which have been successful in many countries. His first CDs were released  by  NIGHTINGALE RECORDS, later he worked with EMI, BAUER and OREADE. As another facette of his creative work he worked for many other NEW AGE artists as a producer and ingeneer.

His first album was called “True Stories”. He insisted, that everything on this CD has a true story behind it, or even is a true story in itself. But when I asked him about the stories, he never would tell me any. He  said: “just  listen to the music, there you can hear them!” When you listen to his beautiful music, you will maybe hear them and you might even get a slight idea, who SANGIT OM is...
